FAQ Integrated Business Planning and S&OP Software

As a general rule for IBP or S&OP solutions: the more data, the better. This data can then be optionally enriched within the application with relevant planning parameters. For initial sales forecasts, historical sales data such as product lines, quantities, customers, sales channels, regions, etc., is required. In the next step, inventory planning involves using the data to determine how the forecasted demand can be optimally met. For subsequent production planning, the system must be enriched with information or data regarding capacities (e.g., setup times, lead times, production sequences, etc.). The data is transferred via import or manually, thereby accurately mapping the entire production environment.
What an interface to the existing IT infrastructure looks like depends on which system or how many systems need to be implemented. In the case of an on-premises installation, it is common to set up a database interface. This way, the data is written from the existing ERP system into the buffer tables of our application in a specific format. This is done in close coordination and collaboration with IT.
For a cloud deployment, middleware technologies can also be utilized. Especially in companies that already use such technology, data exchange can be set up quickly and without complications.
Artificial intelligence is used in two areas: In sales forecasting, AI models and machine learning are used to predict future sales as accurately as possible. Manual data enrichment is also important here, as strategic planning aligned with corporate goals plays a major role in integrated business planning.
The second area where AI is used is production planning. For example, production is planned based on given capacity constraints, which can change frequently. The goal is to achieve production targets as quickly and efficiently as possible.
Companies that use S&OP or IBP software benefit from significantly higher planning quality, shorter decision-making processes, and better coordination across all departments. This results in lower inventory levels, improved on-time delivery, faster responsiveness, and greater resilience, as well as, for example, less spoilage. At the same time, the company’s strategic management is significantly improved through integrated financial planning and internal coordination. In the area of production planning, an IBP solution also ensures maximum utilization of available resources, optimization of setup times, and optimal machine utilization.
Thanks to the scalability of our solution, the process takes approximately four to nine months, depending on the size of the company. About 10–15% of that time is allocated for training key users. We also follow the “train the trainer” concept, which means we train key users so that they can subsequently train other end users independently.
In most cases, REMIRA solutions are provided via cloud; in the case of our IBP software, it is via Microsoft Azure. However, the solutions can also be installed on a local instance. REMIRA ensures that these local versions are always kept up to date.
The data used is subject to all of Microsoft’s security mechanisms as part of the Azure deployment and can therefore be considered secure under the GDPR. In addition, REMIRA’s provisions regarding the GDPR and confidentiality agreements also apply. These can be found on our website.
The planning process is suitable for companies of all sizes; only the focus within the holistic planning process may vary. The payback period depends heavily on the expected added value, but an ROI of 12–24 months can be expected. Industries with a high variety of product variants, volatile demand, or food production processes benefit particularly.
Yes, the REMIRA solution is designed in a way that the functions can be separated and modularized. For example, only the sales planning component can be implemented with a sales forecast, so that a forecast is calculated using historical data. This approach supports the sales team in an S&OP process to carry out accurate sales planning. If needed, the solutions can then be expanded to include additional functions such as procurement planning and production planning, so that the full value of the solution can be realized.
